Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – Is it Really Worth It?

By Antoinette Wakefield

Millions of searches are performed each day on the Internet, with many of these searches for exactly what you are selling.  Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of getting your website listed at the top of search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN. Studies have shown that people scan a search results page from top to bottom and left to right looking for a relevant result. Placement at or near the top of the rankings will therefore increase the number of searchers who will see your site and thus visit it.

SEO is one of the most cost-effective types of Internet marketing available.  It is the process of improving the volume and quality of visitors to your web site from the search engines via “natural” or organic listings.  The higher up on the page a site is listed, most likely the more visitors it will get.  An SEO program may target a variety of search; image search, local search and industry-specific vertical search engines.  An effective SEO program takes into account how the search engines work and what people are searching for.  A website will be optimized by changing its content and HTML code to increase its relevance to the keywords used to search for your business, as well as removing any obstacles that inhibit indexing by search engines.

Businesses want to bring more visitors to their websites, but more visitors does not mean more revenue.  That is why it is important to target your SEO campaign to he keywords that will be used to find your business on the web.  A successful Internet marketing campaign can drive organic traffic to your web site, but it may also be necessary to use paid advertising as well.  A well rounded Internet marketing program will include SEO, paid advertising, building high quality web sites, setting up an analytics program to measure the success of the program and improve the sites conversion rate.

Search Engine Optimization may generate a return on investment. However, search engines are constantly changing their algorithms, and there are no guarantees of continued referrals. Due to this lack of guarantees and certainty, a business that relies heavily on search engine traffic should be sure to consult professional SEO companies to set up and maintain their programs.
